PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ADVICE RELATES ONLY TO VEHICLES IMPORTED FROM EU MEMBER COUNTRIES
This is a complex question, not made any easier by the fact that Greece has apparently been taken to court over the way in which they handle the importation of vehicles from other member states of the EU. From our enquiries, it appears that even the Greek Customs are unhappy with the situation but have stated that they are duty bound to act in accordance with the Greek law as it stands. They will confiscate vehicles which are flagrantly in breach of the existing law.
The costs vary depending upon the age of the vehicle and how you go about it. For example, if you use an import agent, you will have his fees to meet. Despite that, unless you are familiar with the the recommendations and are a fluent Greek speaker, we would strongly advise engaging the services of an import agent. In our case, we considered it money well spent.
We went through this process during May 2002. As far as we are aware, the situation has not altered as of February 2003.
