Tavernas - Roda

Roda used to be a fishing village with a really nice beach. Over the years, it has developed along with the increases in package holidays. Having said that, it is quite small compared to many other resorts.

The beach is still excellent and the tourist is well catered for whatever their taste in food. There is entertainment for those that feel the need!

We are going to mention just three of the establishments in Roda at this time. We may add more as time progresses but the reader should recognise that as permanent residents, the major holiday resorts are not the first places that we think of when it comes to eating out. That is not meant to sound 'snobbish' but probably does!

The three places chosen are all totally different and go to show the diversity of food that one can find in a resort such as Roda.

Taverna Neo Limani

Roda Seafront, Roda, Corfu.

This is a beach front taverna. We had never been to Neo Limani until we were convinced to go by friends who raved about the 'Lamb Rigonata' dish. The place was clearly popular. To be honest, it was packed. Our friends were disappointed that we couldn't get a table at the front but we were happy being away from the road.

What can we say about the meal? The lamb rigonata was excellent. There was a good choice of starters, many of which we had not been offered before.

The service was good but therein lies my only criticism. It was too good! From service to completing our meal took three quarters of an hour! Unheard of! Dinner is at least a three hour event and lunches even longer!

Would I go back? Yes! In fact we have and can report that the food was as good as during our first visit. The marinated anchovies were particularly good.

Our later visits have been at the end of the season when everything was slowing down. I think it helped when the staff realised that we were local and didn't expect such speedy service. However, in fairness, I can imagine that many holiday makers looking to go on to do something else after their dinners would appreciated the speed of service but hey, this is Greece. We don't do speedy!

Okay, there you are on holiday in a foreign country and you have eaten so much foreign food that you feel that you might explode. What do you fancy? An English style cooked meal perhaps? Fish and chips perhaps? This is where Maggie's Place comes in! Don't get us wrong they also do a good line in traditional Greek food.

Calling it a Bistro and Fish Diner is spot-on! It has all the atmosphere of a Bistro and they serve some amazing fish and chips. We mean amazing. You can get every size up to 'Oh my God, I've never seen one that big!'

The food is first rate and the prices well within budget. Perhaps one of the major attractions is Maggie herself! A truly hospitable lady who understands how to treat her customers. We fully understand why parties visit her year after year.

If you are lucky and find that they are open in the morning, try their full English breakfast. Very nice and good value.

As an aside, if you are interested in art or drawing in general, try and get sight of some of Maggie's husband Des's drawings. They are awesome.

By now I can hear some asking why we would want English food if we choose to live in Greece. We will answer that with a question of our own. Do you think that all the owners of Chinese or Indian restaurants in the UK settle down to roast beef and three veg. on Sundays? Of course they don't! We occasionally like something different.

Maggie’s Place can be found right in the centre of Roda, immediately opposite the 600 year-old Byzantine church in the old village lane.

Dimitris Grill Room

Roda, 40981. Corfu

Grill rooms are probably one of the best kept secrets in Greece. They are great places to eat ... unless you are a vegetarian!

Dimitris Grill Room can be found on the main road to Roda sea front coming from the traffic lights at the junction with the Karousades to Acharavi main road. You will find it on the right hand side.

Everything is cooked fresh and can be eaten there or ordered to take away. The premises are very modern and kept scrupulously clean. If you are not familiar with grill rooms and fancy something quick, try a pitta gyro. You get lots of chunks of lamb (or chicken) with salad sauce and chips all wrapped in a pitta bread. Gorgeous! Don't make the mistake of asking for a doner kebab. They are Turkish!

Grill rooms are a great way to eat out and share a few drinks at a very economical price. In our opinion, Dimitris's is as good as it gets.

Highly recommended for 'no frills' dining.
