This website and "The Corfiot" Magazine.

Question: Is this website connected to 'The Corfiot' Magazine?

Answer: No! (This is the short answer.)

'The Corfiot' is an English language monthly magazine published in Corfu by Pedestrian Publications, Afra, 49100, Corfu, Greece (Tel & Fax: (+30) 06610 52833). The editor is Hilary Whitton Paipeti who can be contacted via email on corfiotm@otenet.gr.

We heartily recommend this publication to residents, those intending to visit the island and those that love Greek island life. It frequently contains articles that give an insight into life in Greece as well as its regular columns that serve the 'ex-patriate' population of Corfu.

It is available at most resorts in one or more tourist shops and in most shops that stock newspapers. The price as at August 2002 is €1.5.

Having discussed this with the editor of 'The Corfiot', I feel that some further explanation is necessary. I emphasise that I have not been asked to provide this explanation but make it in case there might be some confusion.

We are sometimes contacted by visitors to this site who mistakenly think that we are connected with 'The Corfiot' magazine. In such circumstances, we have always either made the enquirer aware of their error and have forwarded emails received direct to Hilary Whitton Paipeti. Rest assured that if you have previously been one of the few who have made this mistake, that your enquiries will have been forwarded or you will have been advised. (In most cases, both.)

This problem has been exacerbated recently following our move to Greece and using the same ISP as the editor of this magazine. This has resulted in us having email addresses with our Greek ISP that differ by only one character!

This is unfortunate and it now appears that the email address that I now possess with our ISP, OTENET is the one that Hilary originally applied for. At the time that application was made, the email address had already been allocated and was therefore not available.

However, when I applied in May 2002 for this email address, unknown to me, it had been relinquished by its former owner and I was allocated it. I have now found out that the former owner, was a major tour company and as a result I now am inundated with a lot of emails from other tour operators! This may sound like a comedy of errors or even a Greek tragedy, but it is at the end of the day, an unfortunate accident.

Because of this latter issue, I deliberately do not circulate my OTENET email address unless essential and we have not chosen to host this site with OTENET.

Why 'thecorfiot' You May Ask?
Because this site originally started life to extole the virtues of Corfu, 'The Corfiot' was an obvious choice of name. However, we were aware of the existance of the magazine and hence we gave our site the full name of 'The Corfiot and All Things Greek!', anticipating that we would be expanding our content matter in due course. (Which, of course, regular visitors will be aware that we have.)

Clearly the full title is too long as a URL and hence 'www.thecorfiot.org.uk' was chosen as our domain name. The .org.uk should have given the game away to all that we are not a profit making operation. However, our move to Greece has necessitated many changes in our lives. It is not now financially viable to maintain the old domain name and host ISP. Hence we have have registered the current domain name and host it where it is cheaper for us to maintain.

In case anyone is not clear, we do this in our own time and at our own expense. We do it because we like to do it as a service to others who feel similarly to us about Corfu and Greece in general.

It should be noted that we have had a presence on the web since 1999, a time when 'The Corfiot' magazine did not. As far as I am aware, at the time of writing, 'The Corfiot' still has no presence on the web, although I am advised that one is imminent. We do hope so in order that we might include a link to it!

In conclusion, I hope that this has helped clarify a potentially confusing situation!
